PFLAG Action Alerts

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Find your State & Local Officials at PFLAG.org

Hey Y'all!

Approximately three months ago, PFLAG began a new system of action alerts where members can click a button and have pre-written messages sent directly to their Senators and Representatives (the same system that groups like HRC use.) One button action alerts has been something PFLAGers have requested for a long time and we are excited to be able to bring it to you.

Unfortunately, very few members from the Southern region are taking advantage of our system. This is a big problem for two reasons. First, opposition forces send thousands of emails a day and it is difficult for our legislators to vote for us when all they hear from constituents are pleas to vote against us. Second, the PFLAG voice is a unique voice and goes a long way with our Senators and Representatives. We have heard that almost nothing is more compelling that a request to vote a certain way on a GLBT bill than from an ally organization. Our talking points express the family perspective which is something that other GLBT groups do not do. It is important that our legislators hear the family voice/ally voice and not just the GLBT voice on these issues.

What can you do?

1. Let us know any barriers you may have to answering our action alerts. We would like to make this as easy as possible and will do what we can to take your suggestions. You may email Elizabeth Brown at ebrown@pflag.org with suggestions.

2. Respond to the alerts! You can respond to alerts from more than one organization. If you are a member of HRC and PFLAG respond to both alerts, they send very different but equally valid messages to congress and our congress people need to hear from both groups.

3. Sign-up for the alerts! If you are not receiving our alerts you may sign-up at http://capwiz.com/pflag/mlm/signup/?ignore_cookie=1

Thank you for taking the time to take action for PFLAG. To see a list of our most recent action alerts visit http://capwiz.com/pflag/home/

Help Put the Transgender Community Back Into ENDA!

Take Action!

We have an opportunity to repair ENDA. Without your voices, our families may not be protected.

Over the past few weeks, lawmakers' offices have been flooded with calls, e-mails, and visits from PFLAGers asking them to ensure that all our GLBT family members are protected in the workplace. This week, a non-transgender-inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act (H.R. 3685) was passed out of committee, but we still have a chance to make sure our families are protected.

Representative Tammy Baldwin is now planning on offering a gender identity amendment to the non-inclusive version of ENDA when the bill reaches the floor next week.

The only reason this amendment is even an option is because of the grassroots pressure of the last few weeks. You can help make sure this amendment is a success.

Contact your representative today and urge them to support the Baldwin Amendment. We only have a few days to insure that all our families are protected from workplace discrimination.

Click the Take Action button on the top of the page and send an e-mail to your representative expressing your support for the Baldwin Amendment to H.R. 3685, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act.

Call Congress NOW and tell them that no member of our PFLAG family can be left behind!   Take Action!

Contact your U.S. Representative today to keep the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA) transgender inclusive!

Reports say that some members of Congress have misguidedly decided to move forward with a version of ENDA that does not include gender identity. Our families have worked hard to make sure that all of our loved ones are protected by this legislation. It is critical that your representatives hear from you now urging them to keep both sexual orientation and gender identity in the bill.

Call and urge them to support an ENDA that is fully inclusive.  Let your representative know that you don’t want any member of the gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender community left behind.

Click the Take Action button to enter your zip code.  You will be directed to a page with your representative’s phone number as well as a phone script.  The exclusionary version of the bill will be introduced early next week and will go to a vote as soon as Thursday. Your Representative needs to hear your voice today.

Please make the call TODAY!

Make Your Voices Heard On Hate Crimes Legislation!

Take Action!

We expect that in the upcoming weeks Senators Ted Kennedy (D-MA) and Gordon Smith (R-OR) will file the Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

Groups that oppose equality for our gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) are already sending action alerts encouraging their members to call and email to oppose this important legislation. This means that Senate offices are being bombarded with lies about this legislation.

We need your help to counteract their misleading information now!

Please take the time this week and next to call your senator’s offices and let them know that that your family is counting on them to support hate crime protections for GLBT Americans. To guarantee this legislation becomes law and our voices are not drowned out by there calls you must act now!

Click on Take Action to find your senators’ phone numbers and to access hate crimes talking points. Urge your senator to support the Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention amendment to the Department of Defense Reauthorization today!

Tell Your Senators To Support the Matthew Shepard Act!

Take Action!

In the next several weeks, the Senate will be voting on the Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act or Matthew Shepard Act (S. 1105). Hate crimes legislation is something PFLAGers have been working to get for many years – and now, with your help, we can get this critical legislation passed!

The Matthew Shepard Act would expand current federal law to cover crimes motivated by hatred for one’s gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. The act would also expand federal jurisdiction over hate crimes by providing state and local law enforcement with training and federal assistance to prosecute the perpetrators of acts of violence against our loved ones.

Opposition forces are generating thousands of calls claiming this bill would make it a crime for clergy to speak out against the GLBT community. This is a lie. The Matthew Shepard Act punishes ACTIONS not words.

Act now to make sure that these lies aren’t the only thing our Senators hear!

Contact your Senators today and urge them to support this vital piece of legislation that will ensure that the entire GLBT community is protected!

Acton Alert!
URGE YOUR MEMBERS OF CONGRESS TO SUPPORT HATE CRIMES LEGISLATION!
Monday March 12, 2007
For more than 10 years, PFLAG has been fighting to expand existing hate crimes protections to cover our gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender loved ones. We’re thrilled to recognize that this year we have an excellent chance of seeing our hard work become a reality with the passage of federal hate crimes legislation.

But we’re not there yet – and to make this happen, we need your help.

The Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act (LLEHCPA) would expand current federal law to cover crimes motivated by hatred for one’s gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability. LLEHCPA would also expand federal jurisdiction over hate crimes by providing state and local law enforcement with training and federal assistance to prosecute hate crimes.

Our policy opposition has already sent out action alerts and has generated thousands of calls each day opposing this legislation which could protect our families. Don’t let them be the only voices heard!

Our senators and representatives must hear from us! Your calls, e-mails and visits are desperately needed in this time before the hate crimes bill is introduced.

Contact your representative and senators today and urge them to become a cosponsor or support this important piece of legislation that will ensure that the entire GLBT community is protected!
